The director of “The Artist” on his new film: “In the end, it’s a film about family”
Michel Zenowitzius became one of the most important creators in the film industry after his masterful film “The Artist”. Now, he returns to the big screen with a new work, which is a French adaptation of a successful film from 2017, at the center of which is a tired and gray production of a zombie film and a director who is not willing to give up
Despite the international fame that his film “The Artist” gave him, Michel Zenowitzius now explains, ahead of the release of his new film, that his life has remained exactly the same. ‘I still do it. Directing in France, and not in the United States or elsewhere,” he explained. As you may remember, his film won the Academy Award for Best Film, along with three Golden Globe Awards, a César Award and the Cannes Film Festival Actor Award, all of this alongside revenues of over 130 million dollars worldwide.
“After The Artist went live, I could direct anywhere I wanted. In Hollywood mainly, of course. But the truth is that I prefer to direct in France. True, I became better known, and I could get financing easily, but I feel that I haven’t really changed. I saw how cinema works as a successful business, and it’s not always a pleasant sight,’ he said.
Now, his new film, which opened the previous Cannes Film Festival, is coming to the big screen, which, as mentioned, is an adaptation of a successful Japanese film from 2017. The plot follows the filming of a zombie film in an abandoned factory, and a tired and worn-out staff, alongside one director who is not ready to give up and has great passion. So it happens – a real zombie invasion happens in the middle of the movie. So in fact, very different from Zenowitz’s last film, it is a wild comedy, one where you can find shaved heads, etc.
“Ultimately, it’s a film about a family,” explains Zenowitzius. He further said and added that all the team members had to function as a family throughout the filming. “The key to understanding the film is the relationship between the father and daughter. They manage to reach harmony only when each of them tries to understand and open up to the other side,” he concluded.
