Hedi, the young man seriously injured in the head by an LBD shot at the end of July in Marseille on the sidelines of the riots, reacted this Saturday to the release of the official who shot on Friday.

The young man, who lost part of his skull after surgery following his injuries, accuses him of having targeted him for no reason, assuring that he did not participate in the riots.

The police officer who fired the shot remained in pre-trial detention for 40 days, a decision that had angered many of his colleagues across France. He is now placed “under judicial supervision” and is prohibited from practicing his profession.

A decision that “hit” the young man. The latter denounced at the microphone of BFM TV “a form of injustice”. “I tell myself that we are giving him the opportunity to come out, when he confessed after so many lies (…) It is not honest”, he added.

After initially denying being behind the shooting, the police officer finally admitted to having pulled the trigger on Hedi in early August.

A planned operation

The young man said he was “very disappointed” by the court’s decision. “I am not a judge and I imagine that they had a good reason to make this decision even if for the moment I do not see it”, he confessed.

He also maintained his version of the events, namely that he did not engage in any looting and did not have a threatening attitude on the evening of the events. “I think it’s an excuse (…) You can’t be afraid of me, I’m nice, I didn’t make any threatening gesture, I didn’t throw anything,” he assured. “I was in a tracksuit, I don’t understand what he saw that was threatening,” he added.

He also maintains his accusations against the other police officers who allegedly beat him, saying that “several CCTV cameras” could “bring elements to the investigation”.

Regarding his physical condition, the young man was reassuring. “My neurosurgeon thinks it’s fine (…) he was able to schedule the next operation which will be putting my flap back (the missing part of his skull)”, detailed the young man. “I have paralysis from time to time (on the right side of the body), it’s not obvious, but there is a possibility that it won’t last for life,” he said.

Hedi, who had regretted the lack of state support at the end of July, said he had received a call from government spokesman Olivier Véran but had received “no news” since.

The policeman’s lawyer responds

Pierre Gassend, the lawyer of the police officer in question, reacted on the same channel about the young man this Saturday. “I would like him (Hedi) to know that the police officer I represent never meant to seriously hurt him,” he said.

According to him, “LBD’s shooting commitment was made in a timely manner and within a regulatory framework”, motivated by the young man’s threatening attitude.

“When you are wearing a hood, at night, in an area where looting has just taken place (…) you think that with this outfit, one can legitimately think that you have a suspicious attitude”, a- he explained. “There is no indication that LBD’s shot” is the cause of this injury, he said, however.
