Celine has announced the retirement of Hedi Slimane, who has been artistic, creative and image director since January 2018.
Slimane’s holistic vision, commitment and rigor redefined the brand’s codes while reinstating Celine’s feminine, Parisian style. He worked on a wide range of categories, including men’s, haute couture, and fragrances.
Michael Ryder was chosen to succeed Slimane, who had been in charge of Celine for seven years. From now on, Ryder will be responsible for all creative aspects of Celine’s collections, including womenswear, menswear, leather goods, accessories and couture.
Ryder began his career at Balenciaga with Nicolas Ghesquière and spent 10 years as design director at Celine with Phoebe Philo. In recent years, he has been the creative director of POLO RALPH LAUREN.
Ryder commented on his appointment as follows: “Celine is a brand with beautiful values and heritage that is very close to my heart.
Celine CEO Severine Merle adds: “We are delighted that Michael is returning to Celine. Michael’s vision, creative talent and personal integrity, as well as his strong ties to Celine’s heritage, will ensure the long-term success of the Maison. The choice is it’s better.”
The rider is due to take office in early 2025.
