A helicopter pilot died on Tuesday evening following a crash near the Forest Field Aerodrome in Eyrewell, North Canterbury. Emergency services, including police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and St John, responded to the site after the aircraft plummeted from the sky at approximately 5.20pm.
Emergency Response at the Eyrewell Crash Site
Emergency crews rushed to a rural property near a Waimakariri aerodrome north of Christchurch following reports of a severe aircraft incident on Tuesday afternoon. Fire and Emergency New Zealand dispatched crews from Cust, Oxford, and Rangiora, while St John ambulance personnel also attended the scene. Police confirmed that the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the light aircraft, died at the scene.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dan Overend stated that police are supporting the deceased’s family and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing
as investigators worked through the evening. Footage captured at the location showed officers searching the paddock with torches after dark while the wreckage rested on its side.

Her husband, Steve Lawson, estimated the aircraft was roughly 400 metres from the Forest Field Aerodrome when its mechanical troubles began. The engine coughed, and then everything went silent
