Hello Kitty Turns 50: Sanrio Reveals the Iconic Character’s True Identity as a London Girl!

by time news

In 2024, we celebrate 50 years since the birth of Hello Kitty, the character designed by Yuko Shimizu in 1974. To celebrate, the gift that the Sanrio company has made to its creation is revealing her true identity to the world. Because while we all thought she was a little cat (even the name “Kitty” suggests that), nothing could be further from the truth. The company seems to conceive her as an Oliver Twist of life. Listen to how they describe her: “In reality, she is a little girl born and raised in the suburbs of London.”

“She is a girl, she is not a cat in any way. She has her own cat as a pet and a boyfriend. That’s why she doesn’t move on four legs.”

The most curious part of this matter is that this announcement caught even the Sanrio employees off guard. For example, Jill Cook, one of the top executives of the company, has confessed that while preparing an exhibition for the 50th anniversary, she wrote a brief description of the character saying she was a cat and shortly after received a message from her bosses clarifying the situation. “They were very firm. They told me she was not a cat, but a cartoon character. Hello Kitty is a girl, a friend, but in no case is she a cat. That’s why she sits and walks like any human and that’s why she never goes on four legs. She even has her own pet, a cat named Charmmy Kitty.”

“Born and raised in the suburbs of London, she has a mother, a father, and a twin sister named Mimmy, who is also her best friend. She likes to bake cookies and make new friends. She weighs three apples and is five apples tall. Her world is huge. She has her own pet, Charmmy Kitty, a boyfriend named Dear Daniel, and hundreds of friends. She is an entrepreneur who started from the middle class and is now worth billions of dollars. All that’s left is to wish Hello Kitty a happy birthday.”
