“When it gets colder outside, most of us naturally turn on the heating or sit on the couch with a warm blanket. But there are also people in our society for whom this is not a given. For whom winter is anything but comfortable and even life-threatening,” said the head of the State Chancellery, who is also chairman of the state foundation’s board of trustees. He added: “The cohesion in our society is also expressed in the fact that we help those of us who particularly need our help these days. I am therefore very pleased that the #warmthdonation campaign by the state foundation ‘Together in Hesse’ and Diakonie Hessen has started for the sixth time to collect donations for sleeping bags, blankets and other direct aid so that people can be saved from freezing to death. I call on all citizens to take part in the campaign and donate. Even a small amount can save lives.”

Involvement of many prominent personalities

In Hesse, an estimated 3,000 people live partly or entirely on the streets. The reasons for this vary: Mostly it is poverty combined with difficult personal living conditions that lead to a life without shelter. The #warmthdonate campaign, which has been helping since 2018, ensures that people don’t freeze to death, especially in the cold seasons. The donations are used to finance winter-proof sleeping bags and other emergency aid such as sleeping pads, warm underwear or tents. Distribution is carried out exclusively by emergency housing assistance employees. Through personal contact, #warmthgiving also promotes building trust and access to the help system, thus making a long-term contribution to overcoming homelessness.

The last campaign in 2022/2023 raised a total of 142,000 euros. For example, around 1,050 sleeping mats and 108 tents, weatherproof sleeping bags, as well as a variety of backpacks and warm clothing items were distributed. “The campaign is charity in action. “I am also very pleased that so many prominent personalities are taking part in the campaign again this year and will be visiting facilities again in the coming months in order to draw attention to the situation of homeless people in our society,” said the Minister of State. In addition to the head of the State Chancellery, the two football legends Rudi Völler and Nia Künzer as well as FFH presenter Julia Nestle and mental magician Nicolai Friedrich are also drawing attention to the fundraising campaign. Bestselling author Nele Neuhaus, actor Tim Bergmann and cabaret artist Urban Priol are also there. This year’s partners in the campaign are again Ströer, Mainova and HIT RADIO FFH.

Put your hat on – post a selfie: donation challenge on Instagram and Facebook

Mainova is calling for a special participation campaign on social media this year: for every selfie with a warm hat between December 4th and 25th. In 2023, if it is posted on Instagram or on the energy supplier’s Facebook page under the hashtag #wärmespenden, the company will donate one euro to the #wärmespenden campaign. “Put on your hat, take a photo and do good – this year it will be even easier to get involved. “I’m already very excited to see which creative hat selfies will be found under the hashtag #wärmespenden,” said the head of the State Chancellery.

#warmthdonate is a joint campaign by Diakonie Hessen and the state foundation “Together in Hesse”. The donations are used to finance winter-proof sleeping bags and other emergency aid such as sleeping mats, warm underwear or tents for people living on the streets.
