Hemodiafiltration (HDF): A Decisive Breakthrough in Kidney Dialysis

A European study has crowned Hemodiafiltration (HDF), a special kidney dialysis method for people with kidney failure, as a ‘new’ and decisive method in the dialysis world. However, it is not new.

Specialists at the VieCuri medical center have believed in it since 1999. Patients should be dialyzed when their kidney function is virtually depleted. The blood must then be separated from waste outside the body.

HDF

Hemodiafiltration is used in 80 percent of kidney patients at VieCuri medical center. With HDF, so-called ‘ultra pure water’ is used, with which the blood is extra purified. The water filters larger molecules from the contaminated blood that cannot be reached with regular hemodialysis treatment. ‘Studies have already been done on the effect of HDF, but the effect turned out to be very difficult to conclude’, says internist-nephrologist Ton Luik. ‘We have always believed in it and have used it as standard treatment plan after the outcome of a Turkish study about ten years ago.’ This choice now appears to have been the right one.

Research

A European study shows that HDF indeed reduces the risk of death by 23 percent. With almost a quarter less chance of death, HDF is seen as a breakthrough in the medical world. However, this method is not new, not only VieCuri knows, but also dialysis patient Moniek Latten (37) from Baarlo knows. She has been in VieCuri’s dialysis center for more than nine years, three times a week, four hours per treatment. ‘It has been about HDF for years, at one hospital and not at another. They couldn’t put their finger on it, while I clearly feel a difference’, says Latten. “When I was without HDF for three months, I started to notice it. At first you think it might be placebo, but no it was really clear. The fact that the scientists might not be able to put their finger on it didn’t interest me that much. But when the article came out I thought: finally they have proof!’
