Henry Kissinger, Former US Secretary of State, Dies at 100

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who played a significant role in shaping American foreign policy, has passed away at the age of 100. His foundation announced his death, but the cause was not disclosed.

Kissinger, who held the position of Secretary of State under two US presidents in the 1970s, is credited with bringing about major changes at the international level. His foreign policies were widely praised, including the ceasefire with Vietnam, friendship with the former Soviet Union, and bridged relations with China.

Born in Germany in 1923, Kissinger escaped from the Nazis and took refuge in the United States with his family. He became a US citizen and went on to study and work as a professor before serving in the government.

He was instrumental in ending the Vietnam War and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973. However, his relations with India were not always cordial. He supported Pakistan during the India-Pakistan war in 1971 and made derogatory comments about India and its then-Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

But in 1974, after India’s nuclear test, Kissinger’s outlook on the country changed. He began urging the US government to strengthen relations with India, especially after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister.

Last May, Kissinger celebrated his 100th birthday, and in June, he met with Modi during the Prime Minister’s visit to the US. Kissinger praised Modi’s speech and spoke with him for a while.

Kissinger, who divorced his first wife in 1964, married for the second time in 1974. He is survived by two children from his first marriage.

The former Secretary of State leaves behind a legacy of shaping America’s foreign policy, with his influence felt in diplomatic relations around the world. Despite his mixed history with India, Kissinger ultimately worked towards fostering a relationship between the US and the country, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties with the emerging global power.
