The skeleton of a mutilated middle-aged man was found in the archaeological area of ​​Herculaneum in fornix area, shelters for boats in the area where the ancient city had a sea front.

Here many skeletons of inhabitants of Herculaneum have already been found who sought refuge and perhaps a passage by sea for the escape during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD which devastated the plain of Pompeii.

The skeleton was found during archaeological excavations and restorations for the arrangement and opening to the public of the ancient beach, a project shared with the Packard humanities Institute; was buried under the pyroclastic flow that forms the embankment in front of the city, in front of the archways, on the beach in front of the area where the sea arrived in Roman times.

The excavation is by park archaeologists in collaboration with those of the Haerculaneum conservation Project of the Packard humanities Institute.
