Local forecasters are warning Massachusettsians to spend more time on their Tuesday morning commute than usual because of the storm, which is expected to drop several inches of snow across the state.

National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist Bill Simpson said the Boston area will get its first “sport” of snow this winter. All parts of the state are expected to see a few more inches, but the further west you go, the more snow you’ll see, he said.

NWS Winter Weather Advisory for Eastern Massachusetts beginning Monday at 7:00 PM and continuing until Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Eastern Massachusetts could see two to five inches of snow and wind gusts of up to 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, a winter storm warning has been issued for central and western Massachusetts from 7 p.m. Monday through 7 p.m. Tuesday. The service warns that areas under the warning could see heavy snow Monday night, but heavy snowfall is expected throughout the storm, with snow totals of 5 to 9 inches.

The NWS is expecting snow for inland Massachusetts between 7pm and 11pm on Monday and between 10pm and 2am in the east.

“Snowfall will be heavy between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m., and travel will be difficult during this time,” the Korea Meteorological Administration said. “Expect slow movement on the roads during the Tuesday morning rush hour.”

Snow is expected to continue into Tuesday, but the service is predicting rain in areas east of I-95 as temperatures rise below freezing in southern New England.

“Roads will be in excellent condition for midday and Tuesday afternoon commutes,” the service said.

Simpson said snow will continue throughout the day west of Worcester. Berkshire can see 7 to 10 inches.
