Steamboat Willie, a 1928 short film featuring the first non-speaking versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, widely regarded as the moment when Disney made cinematic history, is of everyone from January 1, 2024. Their images are now available to the public in the United States, after Disney’s copyright expired. This means that creatives such as cartoonists can now rework and use early versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse without permission or cost.
“We will of course continue to protect our rights in more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works which remain subject to copyright,” the company told the BBC. US copyright law states that rights to characters can be held for 95 years, after which they can be legally shared, performed, reused, repurposed or sampled.
The short film lasts 7 minutes and 48 seconds: it was the first cartoon to present a completely synchronized soundtrack with music, sound effects and dialogues (unintelligible).
