jpnn.comJAKARTA – The Supreme Leader of the World’s Catholics, Pope Francis, and the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, Nasaruddin Umar, signed the Istiqlal Joint Declaration 2024: “Strengthening Interfaith Harmony for Humanity” on Thursday (5/9) in Jakarta.
The following is the content of the Istiqlal Declaration 2024 read by the Istiqlal official, Ismail Cawidu:
In responding to these two crises while adhering to the teachings of our respective religions, and acknowledging the contribution of the foundation and philosophy of the Pancasila state, we, together with other religious leaders present, call for the following:
1.? ?The values embraced by our religious traditions must be promoted effectively, to defeat the culture of violence and indifference that plagues our world. In truth, religious values must be directed to enhance the culture of respect, dignity, compassion, reconciliation and solidarity of brotherhood to overcome dehumanization and environmental destruction.
2.? ?State leaders in particular, inspired by their respective spiritual narratives and traditions, must work together to respond to the above crises, identify their causes and take action.
3.? ?Since there is one human family throughout the world, interreligious dialogue must be recognized as an effective means of resolving local, regional and international conflicts, especially those triggered by the misuse of religion. In addition, our religious beliefs and rituals have a special capacity to touch the human heart, thereby fostering a deeper respect for human dignity.
4. Realizing that a healthy, peaceful and harmonious environment is essential to being a true servant of God and caretaker of creation, we sincerely appeal to all people of good will to take firm action to safeguard the integrity of the environment and its resources as we have inherited it from previous generations and hope to pass it on to our children and grandchildren.
This declaration calls for the values espoused by religious traditions to be effectively promoted to eliminate the culture of violence and indifference that is sweeping the world. (flo/jpnn)
