The Acting Under-Secretary met with Nigerien civil society and, separately, members of the group claiming power in Niger to explain what is at stake if Niger fails to uphold its own constitutional order. These include the potential loss of hundreds of millions of dollars intended to support the economy and the security of the people of Niger. Given its concerns about negative political developments, the United States has decided to suspend its assistance to the Nigerien government as long as the situation remains unstable.
