What is it about : The heavy toll of the tragic fire that occurred on Saturday September 23, 2023 in Sèmè-Kraké once again revealed the dangerousness of the trade in contraband gasoline, commonly called “Kpayo”. With his colleagues from health, social affairs and public security, the Minister of State in charge of the economy and finance, Romuald Wadagni went to the survivors’ bedside to provide them with government support. He took the opportunity to announce the measures planned by the government to clean up the sector of the sale of contraband gasoline in Benin.

What’s he saying : According to the Minister of State, Romuald Wadagni, the executive has put in place a reintegration and retraining program for “Kpayo” sellers. This program aims to train these actors and reintegrate them into other sectors. According to the data he provided, more than 5,000 people have been successfully retrained in the textile sector, specifically in Glo-djigbé. This transition to decent jobs is an important step towards reducing the tragedies caused by adulterated gasoline deposits. Also, the minister notified that players in the sector will now have the mini stations that the government has acquired to continue their activity in conditions of total security. “What happened on September 23, 2023, clearly shows us that there is an urgent need to change the way this product is marketed. This is why last year the government ordered tens of thousands of mini-stations. 2,000 have arrived since June and are being installed. By 2024, everywhere in the country, we will have these mini-stations,” he said. According to the ministerial authority, those who continue to sell gasoline must do so from mini-stations which “are completely secure devices and which should make it possible to avoid tragedies such as these in the future. than that of Sèmè-Kraké,” assured Minister of State Romuald Wadagni. Continuing his remarks, the minister said that there are 54,000 kpayo sales points in Benin and that several tens of thousands of families rely on this trade. “The people who are doing this trading are not doing it because they want to expose themselves to risk like what happened this morning. They do it because they have no choice. This is why the Government has launched, for several months now, a retraining/reintegration program for these actors,” he said.
