Certain Christians defend what in some segments of the evangelical church, specifically the neo-Pentecostal, is known as the “hereditary curse”. It is a current that believes it is possible that certain bad events are part of a supposed spiritual heritage of parents and their ancestors.

The theme was addressed by the theologian and writer Gutierres Fernandes Siqueira in a summary post published by him on his profile on a social network, where he refuted the concept of hereditary curse, explaining that it is something the result of a misinterpretation of the Holy Scriptures.

The error, precisely, comes from reading verses like Exodus 20:5, where it is written: “You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of their fathers to the third and fourth generation…”.

Gutierres, however, recalled that no biblical passage should be interpreted outside of a context that takes into account the entirety of the Scriptures, given that its message is unique. That is, that its parts complement each other in sense.

“It is important to understand that the Bible is a unified text, and any verse must be read in the context of the biblical message as a whole,” he said, citing as an example another passage, in this case, which teaches the complete opposite of the hereditary curse concept. .

“The soul that sins, it shall die; the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous will be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon him,” says Ezekiel 18:20.

“This passage directly challenges the idea of a ‘hereditary curse’, emphasizing personal and individual responsibility for our actions and sins”, explains the theologian in his post.

redemptive work

According to Gutierres, the supposed hereditary curse also does not hold up to the salvific work of Jesus Christ, since the Bible makes it clear that the Lord makes all things new, restoring the life of the repentant sinner, as specified in the text of 2 Corinthians 5:17.

The theologian also explained that diseases of genetic origin have nothing to do with spiritual inheritance, but with a natural human condition, under which everyone is subject, as they are the result of the human fall in Eden.

Therefore, “there is no fixed destination based on these factors. We are called to meet these challenges with faith, hope and love, trusting in the mercy of God and the transforming power of Jesus Christ.” concludes the author.
