The film about how Bruce Springsteen’s new concert in Donostia was created would be as entertaining and long as the musician’s shows. There was uncertainty, nervousness and a lot of discreet ‘cuisine’, because many cities were bidding to host the New Jersey rocker’s show. The result pays off: on June 21st, almost 40,000 people will be able to enjoy one of those collective celebrations that only Springsteen can create at the Anoeta stadium. Or will it be 80,000 spectators? Will there be a second concert in San Sebastián?
Only the June 21st performance is officially confirmed, with tickets going on sale starting from October 8th. But on Springsteen fan sites, always well informed, yesterday it was taken for granted that if the seats for this first date sell out quickly, as expected, there will be a second show on Tuesday 24 June. This is not just the case in Donostia: it is also noted that Lille, France, will have a second date, and that other cities will be announced as the capacity of the already confirmed concerts is sold out.
Last minute cancellations
Iñigo Argomaniz, head of Get In, was present yesterday with a hoarse voice but a well-tuned spirit. «I am impressed by the reception of the news of the concert. “Springsteen creates a ‘good vibe’ that spreads to everyone, and those of us who have seen this tour before know that it continues to connect with audiences in a very special way.”
It wasn’t easy. «In recent years it has happened twice that we had everything prepared and at the last moment their visit to Donostia was cancelled. The last one, exactly one year ago: we already had the poster and the press conference ready and a few hours before the end the plans had changed. Springsteen’s team then opted for a repeat in Madrid and Barcelona, which made the production cheaper, and also influenced the fact that the musician, recovering from his health problems, preferred to travel less and be more stable in subsequent destinations .
This was the 2024 European tour, even if the musician’s aphonia, which forced him to suspend his concert in Marseille a few hours before the start, and to cancel some other appointments, led him to announce that in the summer of 2025 he would return, with a more limited tour, to those cities that remained without concerts and a few others. And soon San Sebastián was among the main candidates.
Is it true that Springsteen’s taste for Donostia influences the decision or is this literature that we Gipuzkoans ourselves like to believe in? «I am referring to the facts: Anoeta is the smallest stadium in the Tour, with only 38 thousand spectators compared to other places with double the capacity. And it’s the only city of this size where he will perform up to four times. “There has to be something special, right?” asks Argomaniz.
The confirmation
The negotiations with Doctor Music, the tour’s Spanish partner and Springsteen’s hard core, were long. And while an agreement in principle has been reached, “nothing will be confirmed until Springsteen’s official website releases tour dates.” It happened on Tuesday at 10 in the morning, Spanish time. A few minutes later, those responsible for Get In, together with Deputy General Eider Mendoza and Mayor Eneko Goia, announced the news in the press conference called a few minutes earlier.
“The Municipality and the Provincial Council support the concert with aid for the assembly and production costs of the stadium”, explains Argomaniz. «After the beautiful experience of Rammstein we will continue along this line, and as a novelty we can say that, as happened with the German group, the stop will be in the destination closest to the Anoeta tower, contrary to what happened in previous visits.
It’s going to be a hectic June. In addition to Fermin Muguruza, announced for the 14th, and the Springsteen event (which could be double), we are working on at least one other performance of an international character.
