A precious witness to our history, the renovation of the Château de Fontainebleau is underway on Thursday 2 March. Frescoes or paintings, many rooms were in dire need of restoration.

The Château de Fontainebleau is nicknamed the House of Kings, because over time they have all passed through this place. During the Renaissance, there was François 1er. A gallery now bears his name. The historic building has been damaged by time. Behind a golden door, restorers work under the vault and try to save eight 16th century frescoes. “We can clearly see, from what we have left of this heritage, that we must not lose the slightest fragment, the slightest scale and we will have to value everything, and it will be very long, very meticulous”says Émilie Checroun, restorer of paintings.

Unique paintings in the world

This represents 12 months of meticulous work. In the end, the frescoes regain some of their original pastel colors. At the same time, in another part of the castle, other teams are also working to go back in time on huge formats: 3.50 meters high by 6.50 meters wide. Difficult to get out of their apartments, so sometimes they had to be unhooked from the wall. They are very damaged, but the paintings are unique in the world.
