Hermes (belonging to the Otto Group) has gone to the ceiling. His name: “Spot”. Behind it is a futuristic looking machine with four legs, cameras and gas detectors for handling.

The robot, which is reminiscent of a dog, will be increasingly used in the logistics industry and take the burden off human workers. Hermes Perfillment is the Otto Group’s central warehouse and logistics provider and operates one of Europe’s largest shipping centers in Haldensleben.

“Symbol” ensures more security

According to a report in the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, “Spot” can even burn. Above all, a robot dog can do one thing: work without complaint, 24 hours a day if necessary. Hermes Perfillment operates several logistics and transportation companies. The focus is on Germany. “Symbol” is used throughout the entire transportation industry in Haldensleben. There, the robot dog monitors pipe systems in technical areas, some of which are difficult for humans to reach.

What else can the machine do:

  • Monitor heat development
  • Manual measuring devices
  • Look for air and gas leaks
  • Monitor emergency exits

“Spot” was developed by the technology company Boston Dynamics from the USA, price: around 70,000 euros.

Will “Ami” deliver Hermes parcels in the future?

No, because the “Icon” cannot carry weight and is not developed for that purpose. But another robot is to be used in warehouse logistics: “Na”. You should be able to lift heavy packages. Otto Group plans to use robots in 20 logistics centers within the next two years.

“Otto” and “Hermes” are collaborating with “Spot” Developer Boston Dynamics. Over the next two years, “packs” of robot dogs will be deployed to more than 20 logistics companies.

Robodog: AI worker or career killer?

The workhorse has a lot to offer: Thanks to AI control, hard work for humans can be done at lightning speed. “Aami” never complains and never gets sick.

Anette Sigarusano from the Otto Group told Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR): “We believe in the collective that machines are performing repetitive, heavy tasks, but of course people need to manage and maintain this in this context.”

Where is the robot dog “Icon” used?

In the industry, the “Symbol” snoops through renewables and power plants to monitor systems and collect data. It is also used in the agricultural industry. On construction sites, he monitors construction progress and inspects structures, especially in hazardous areas. The power industry uses Symbol to inspect wind turbines.

A few years ago, the police in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg had good experiences with robot dogs
