Hesse is making a nostalgic move for drivers, allowing the return of beloved, older license plate combinations like BID and DI. The change, effective today, reflects a desire to connect residents with their regional identities and simplify a previously cumbersome vehicle registration process.
For many, a vehicle’s license plate is more than just a registration marker-it’s a symbol of home, belonging, and local pride. That’s the sentiment Hesse’s Transport Minister Kaweh Mansoori (SPD) expressed to the Federal Council, driving the state’s push to offer more versatility in vehicle registration. Residents in northern Hesse can already choose from these classic plates.
The state Chancellery confirmed that the demand for greater freedom in regional license plate options had been consistently voiced to the state government, according to dpa. Sence 2013, residents of Hofgeismar have been able to re-apply for the HOG license plate, and those in Wolfhagen can opt for WOH. Additionally, BID is once again available for vehicles registered in Biedenkopf, within the Marburg-Biedenkopf district.
Revived Plates Across Hesse
The reactivation isn’t limited to these locations. Throughout Hesse, numerous previously discontinued abbreviations, eliminated during regional reforms in the 1970s, have been brought back. These include BÜD for Büdingen in the Wetterau district, and FROM for Dieburg in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. In the Main-Kinzig district, plates GN for Gelnhausen and SLU for Schlüchtern have been reinstated. USI for Usingen in the Hochtaunuskreis and WELL for Weilburg in the Limburg-Weilburg district are also back on the roads.
Currently, legal restrictions limit the introduction of new license plates. Hesse aims to change this, actively lobbying the Federal Council to grant cities and districts substantially more autonomy in assigning regional abbreviations. The state hopes to move beyond limitations related to the exhaustion of existing combinations, the reintroduction of previous plates, or the creation of new registration districts.
Transport Minister Mansoori emphasized that even amidst pressing federal, state, and local challenges, “small local heartfelt projects” shouldn’t be overlooked. He stated that the vehicle license plate initiative doesn’t detract from other priorities but provides residents with a tangible way to express their connection to their homeland. The goal is to empower municipal
