The Hessian financial administration has announced the purchase of at least 10.4 million pieces of data that run under the keyword “Pandora Papers”. The federal state will be responsible for evaluating the data leak for all of Germany and also for investigative authorities abroad, reported Hesse’s Finance Minister Michael Boddenberg (CDU). The Pandora Papers were leaked to an international consortium of journalists in 2021. “Our experts have examined the data offered to us in detail and classified it as authentic and usable,” he said.

There are now more than 3.8 terabytes of data. The other federal states and the federal government were informed about the purchase of the Pandora Papers. “The evaluation and the subsequent investigations by the various authorities will show how valuable the Pandora Papers are from a tax point of view,” said Boddenberg after Hesse was able to successfully complete the purchase of the data in cooperation with the customs investigation service.

According to him, the first indications of cases worthy of examination are already recognizable. “The signal is important to me: If there are indications of tax crime, we will follow them up with all the means available to us,” said the minister. The Pandora Papers are processed by the Kassel tax office, which has already dealt with similar cases.

As the Ministry of Finance in Wiesbaden emphasizes, Hessen was responsible for evaluating the “Panama Papers” for the tax authorities in Germany, among other things. Here, too, they worked together with investigators at home and abroad.
