Heston Kjerstad Gets Called Up to the Orioles After Impressive Minor League Performance

by time news

Heston Kjerstad, a top prospect in the Baltimore Orioles organization, has been called up to the Major Leagues for the first time. The promotion came after Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle exited a game with left shoulder discomfort. Although Mountcastle’s injury is not expected to send him to the injured list, Kjerstad was pulled early from Triple-A Norfolk’s game as a precaution.

Upon learning the news, Kjerstad immediately called his parents to share the joyous moment. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft expressed a wave of emotions, including excitement, relief, and gratitude for the opportunity to chase his dream.

Kjerstad’s journey to the Majors hasn’t been straightforward. He missed the entire 2021 season due to myocarditis, a heart muscle inflammation. Additionally, he was sidelined at the beginning of the 2022 campaign with a left hamstring strain. However, Kjerstad made up for lost time by delivering impressive performances at every level. He was named the Arizona Fall League MVP last year and stood out in big league Spring Training this year.

Manager Brandon Hyde spoke highly of Kjerstad’s performance, commending his power and ability to hit. Kjerstad joins a growing list of top prospects to make their debut with the Orioles, including Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, Grayson Rodriguez, Jordan Westburg, and Colton Cowser.

While Kjerstad may have limited playing time during the remaining weeks of the regular season, his bat can have a significant impact. Left-hander DL Hall, who witnessed Kjerstad’s batting practice sessions in Norfolk, praised his power and unique swing.

Kjerstad’s ultimate goal is to hit balls to Eutaw Street, a famous target for home runs at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. He has overcome adversity and maintained a focus on his end goal, proving that setbacks are mere stepping stones to a major comeback.
