The Lebanese Hezbollah movement fired about 50 rockets this Thursday at northern Israel from southern Lebanon, its biggest attack on neighboring country amid almost daily exchanges of gunfire coinciding with the escalation between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.

The 48 Katyusha rockets targeted military bases, the political party and militia said, a day after an Israeli strike killed five of its members, including the son of the leader of the Hezbollah-led political coalition in the Lebanese Parliament.

The Israeli military said the five Hezbollah members were killed in a bombing of a southern Lebanese city from which rockets were launched into its territory.

Israel and Hezbollah, which fought a month-long war in 2006, have repeatedly exchanged fire across the border since escalation between Israel and Hamas erupted over the Palestinian Islamist movement’s attacks on Israeli soil last month.

At least 105 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon since then, including at least 14 civilians, including three journalists. Nine people, mostly civilians, were killed in Israel in the same period by Hezbollah rockets.

The Lebanese group said in a statement that it fired the rockets at an Israeli base around the city of Safed and at “infantry soldiers of the Israeli enemy” at the Al Dhahira base.

“Appropriate weapons have been used and there have been direct hits,” he said.

Subsequently, he claimed to have attacked a “concentration of enemy soldiers” in a forested area in the Ramim region and stated that he also achieved “direct hits,” the Europa Press news agency reported.

In Israel, authorities at the Manara kibbutz, in the Ramim area, said that two projectiles hit two homes, with no reports of casualties at the moment.

The Israeli Army put the number of rockets fired at 35 and said air defenses intercepted many of them.

“In addition, terrorists have fired multiple anti-tank missiles and mortars at multiple areas on the border since early in the day,” the Army added in a statement.

“Military planes have attacked multiple shuttles from which the shots were fired,” he said.

This wave of attacks comes a day after the death of five members of Hezbollah, including the son of the leader of the parliamentary group led by the party, Mohamed Raad, in a bombing of a house in Beit Yahun, southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah, a group supported by Iranian authorities, is engaged in fighting with the Israeli Army that it says is in support of Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups resisting an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Israel launched this offensive after the Hamas attacks in its territory on October 7, which left some 1,200 dead and nearly 240 kidnapped, including twenty Argentines.

Authorities in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, have so far reported some 14,000 deaths, including some 5,800 children, from the Israeli offensive.
