First warning in Israel since Hamas attack on October 7 last year
The Lebanese pro-Iran armed group Hezbollah announced on the 25th (local time) that it had fired a missile at the headquarters of the Mossad intelligence agency near Tel Aviv, Israel. Mossad is the organization that recently led the ‘pager terror attacks’ throughout Lebanon. Israel reportedly intercepted the missile launched from Lebanon with the missile interception system ‘David’s Sling’.
Tel Aviv, known as the interception site, is Israel’s economic center and is located far from the main battle line against Hezbollah. As the missiles flew toward central Israel, sirens sounded in several cities, including Netanya in central Israel, for the first time since the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas broke out on October 7 last year, local media reported.
According to Israeli media outlet The Times of Israel and CNN, the Israeli military intercepted a missile launched from Lebanon near Tel Aviv on the 25th. It is reported that the missile interception system David’s Sling was activated during the process. The Israeli military said, “A surface-to-surface missile from Lebanon was confirmed after sirens sounded in the Tel Aviv and Netanya areas, and was intercepted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) air defense system.”
According to Israeli authorities, it was the first time that sirens had sounded in several Israeli cities since October 7, when war broke out between Israel and Hamas. The exact damage, including casualties, that occurred when the Israeli military intercepted the missiles on the 25th is not known.
Hezbollah announced that it had launched an attack on central Israel, where the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad is headquartered, after the interception was reported. Mossad is the intelligence agency that is said to have masterminded the entire process from the production of the pagers that exploded throughout Lebanon, Hezbollah’s stronghold, to the attacks. Hezbollah said it launched the missiles in response to the pager explosions and the killing of the attack commander.
Hezbollah has fired hundreds of rockets and drones from Lebanon at northern Israel since conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted in October last year, but the launch of missiles toward Tel Aviv, which serves as Israel’s administrative capital, was unusual, CNN said.
Fears of a full-scale war between the two sides are growing as Hezbollah begins its counterattack following Israel’s pager attacks and large-scale airstrikes. After the missiles were launched in Lebanon on the 25th, the Israeli military sent a message in Arabic to Lebanese residents, warning them to “not return to their homes until further notice for your own safety.” This suggests that additional missile attacks will be launched against Lebanon.
This Hezbollah missile attack came after Israel carried out airstrikes on at least 1,300 locations, including southern Lebanon, on the 23rd, killing about 500 people, including children, and injuring about 1,650. Analysis has shown that the casualties from the airstrikes on the 23rd are the largest daily casualties in Lebanon since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out in October of last year.
