Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah fired about 70 rockets and drones into northern Israel in retaliation, local media reported.
According to Al Jazeera and other sources on the 25th (local time), Hezbollah issued a statement that day, saying, “We have launched large-scale drone and rocket attacks on Israel.” Hezbollah explained that day’s attack as “retaliation for the Israeli military’s assassination of its commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, Lebanon on the 30th of last month.”
“It will take time to complete this military operation, and we will then make a detailed statement on the process and objectives,” Hezbollah said. “At this moment, we are at the highest level of preparedness,” it added. “We will severely punish any Zionist (Israeli) aggression, especially if it affects civilians.”
Al Jazeera quoted the Lebanese channel Al-Maydeen as saying Hezbollah was carrying out a “massive retaliation.” “More than 70 rockets were fired from Lebanon toward western Al-Jalil,” Al-Maydeen said. It also said Hezbollah’s missiles were “targeting western Galilee and deep inside the Golan Heights.”
Earlier that morning, the Israeli military announced that it was conducting a preemptive strike in southern Lebanon, saying it would “preemptively respond to the Hezbollah threat.” According to reports, the Israeli military said, “As an act of self-defense to eliminate the Hezbollah threat, the Israeli military is striking terror targets in Lebanon where Hezbollah was planning to launch attacks against Israeli civilians.”
In a follow-up to the massive preemptive strike, Israel declared a state of emergency for the next 48 hours. According to local media, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant declared the state of emergency, saying, “The military will be able to give instructions to civilians, limit crowds, and seal off the affected areas.”
