Hi-Fi Rush It was the big surprise of the past Developer_ Direct from Xbox and Bethesda. And although at the time of its surprise launch little was known about the origin of the game, now an interview with with director John Johanas reveals the video games and music —and even a video game console— that served as inspiration for this fun title.

According to Johanas, who is a musician as well as a game developer, much of the inspiration for Hi-Fi Rush came from music games, especially Guitar Hero Livethe failed return of Activision’s popular rhythm franchise.

«I still have Guitar Hero Live control under my desk. I brought the game back to the office for everyone to try and understand the basics of rhythm games, how to calculate if they got a grade right or not, stuff like that.Johanas told The Verge.

Another point of inspiration for the look-and-feel of the game was the last great console of SegaThe popular Dreamcast. The director says that he was looking to create something very different from the super-realistic and gloomy current games of his studio, such as The Evil Within o Ghostwire: Tokyo.

«I wanted to go back to basics, to a game that was fun and didn’t put the story above everything else. Sometimes you just want something that is pure fun and no pretensions. and we just wanted create an experience that makes us feel good» says Johanas.

In the interview, Johanas details that his favorite rock band, Radioheadwas also a great inspiration for the development of his vision for Hi-Fi Rush.

«Radiohead is probably my favorite band of all time.. They changed my perspective of what you can do with music and how to transform your image over time. That was weirdly inspiring making this game. I would listen to the “Kid A” album on the way to work because it reminded me that you can put art at the center of everything, as long as you are very confident and proud to do something that you think is good, it will find its audience.«.
