A year after being appointed curator, scenographer and designer of the pavilion for Morocco’s first participation in the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Mr. Lahlou returns this year as a designer among the ten Moroccan brands specializing in furniture, decoration, carpets and floor coverings, exhibiting in the national stand set up on 200 m2 for the 2024 edition.
“I am delighted to have the recognition of a great design nation through the Italian show for almost 14 years now,” he told MAP, saying he was happy to exhibit in Milan in the Moroccan pavilion with the Maison de l’Artisan.
In the eyes of Hicham Lahlou, who has a “long history” with the Milan show and Italian design in general, it is an unmissable show, especially since Milan is “the epicentre of world design”.
“The world of design is in Milan today, especially since the event coincides with Milan Design Week. The whole city is therefore buzzing with various events, exhibitions, openings and more,” he noted.
As part of the Salone Del Mobile 2024, Hicham Lahlou is exhibiting two new collections: “Clover Ottomans”, poufs inspired by the clover leaf, entirely handmade with Fez embroidery, and his famous “ZAHA” teapot designed in homage to the great Iraqi architect and designer Zaha Hadid, who died in 2016.
This latest creation, he said, reproduces the steps alluding in particular to the constructivism movement of which the late Zaha Hadid was one of the leading figures.
Other Moroccan exhibitors on the bill for this edition include Mad in Bled, Les Dix Doigts, Noun Design, RA Luxury Design, Soufiane Zarib, Tribaliste, Porte d’Or, Kraft Sol and Salima Filali Créations.
The designer sees the exchanges between exhibitors and visitors to the show as “a hymn to Moroccan creation and know-how that are exported”, noting that luxury craftsmanship is constantly growing around the world.
Built on an area of 210,000 m2, the Salone del Mobile is attended by 2,000 exhibiting brands representing 181 countries and is expected to welcome 307,000 visitors.
