Japanese Video Game Director Hideki Kamiya Leaves PlatinumGames

Hideki Kamiya, the renowned Japanese video game director known for his work on games such as “Bayonetta,” “Viewtiful Joe,” and “The Wonderful 101,” will be leaving PlatinumGames. The news was first announced by the development studio on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, with Kamiya himself confirming the news via his own account shortly afterwards. His official departure from PlatinumGames is set for October 12th.

While neither party has provided an exact reason for Kamiya’s departure, it appears to be an amicable separation. In a statement, PlatinumGames expressed gratitude for Kamiya’s creative ideas, leadership, and contribution to the growth of the studio. They believe he will continue to succeed in his future endeavors as a game creator and look forward to seeing the industry flourish with his presence.

Kamiya himself shared that the decision was made after careful consideration and based on his beliefs. Although not an easy choice, he believes it is for the best and stated, “I will continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way.”

Kamiya initially gained prominence at Capcom, where he directed games such as “Resident Evil 2,” “Devil May Cry,” and “Viewtiful Joe.” He later directed “Ōkami” at the Capcom-owned studio Clover. In 2006, he co-founded PlatinumGames with Shinji Mikami and Atsushi Inaba. At PlatinumGames, Kamiya directed games like “Bayonetta,” “The Wonderful 101,” and worked on the canceled Microsoft Studios project, “Scalebound.” His most recent project at PlatinumGames was “Project G.G.,” referred to as the climax of his “superhero trilogy” alongside “Viewtiful Joe” and “The Wonderful 101.”

Hideki Kamiya’s departure from PlatinumGames marks the end of an era, and the gaming community eagerly anticipates his future endeavors and the impact he will continue to make in the industry.
