High Court order to modify auto charges

Chennai: The Chennai High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to adjust the auto tariffs in line with petrol and diesel prices for the benefit of auto drivers and passengers.

In the order, the judges said that auto tariffs should be adjusted according to the price of petrol and diesel and that traffic police should conduct periodic inspections to detect autos that are not fitted with meter fittings.

Attorney S.V. The Chennai High Court, which heard Ramamoorthy’s case, has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to adjust auto tariffs to keep pace with the ever-changing petrol and diesel prices and to implement the government’s requirement to fit meters.

The apex court has said that all autos can be fitted with electronic meters to adjust petrol and diesel prices, and that the practice of converting petrol and diesel prices to software can be handled without taking long-term action to adjust auto tariffs.
