The Chennai High Court has refused to stay the notice sent by the Income Tax Department to former Deputy Chief Minister Panneer Selvam to pay Rs 82 crore 32 lakh in taxes.
The Income Tax Department conducted a search at the home and offices of Shekhar Reddy. Based on the documents seized during the raid, a notice was sent to former Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on behalf of the Income Tax Department. The notice stated that Rs 20 lakh should be paid as tax for the assessment year 2015-16 and Rs 82 crore 12 lakh for the assessment year 2017-18.
Panneerselvam filed a case in the Chennai High Court seeking an injunction restraining further action on the notice.
The bench comprising Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bandari and Justice Adigeshaval, who heard the case, refused to stay the Income Tax Department’s notice and ordered that all proceedings, including the Income Tax Department’s assessment order, be subject to the final verdict of the case. Further, the judges, who ordered the Income Tax Department to respond to the petition, adjourned the hearing.
