Avraham Gil, the son of the Israeli consul in Miami, has resolved his legal problems without going to jail. The charges against the young man were dropped and the case is now closed. In connection with this, Avraham Gil, 19, promised to immediately leave the United States and return to Israel to join the IDF.

At a brief hearing in Miami-Dade County, a judge approved a “pretrial intervention” agreement between Gil’s attorney, Steven Milan, and the Florida Attorney General’s Office. The judge said the consul’s son had complied with the terms of the agreement, which included taking a defensive driving course, completing 100 hours of community service, agreeing not to drive and donating $500 to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The incident occurred on January 27 this year. Avraham Gil, riding a motorcycle in the coastal city of Sunny Isles Beach, a suburb of Miami, was accused of hitting a patrolman when the young man was asked to stop and identify himself. The officer had to use force, knocking Gil to the ground and arresting him on the spot.

The case received local media coverage and then international attention because of the status of the consul’s son and the claim of immunity made by his lawyer at the first court hearing. The claim was eventually rejected.

Last month, Gil wrote a letter of apology to the injured police officer, saying he had learned his lesson. He told the court that after this “major awakening,” he decided to enlist in the IDF.

According to Florida media, Gil’s attorney added during the hearing that the family’s visa expires at the end of the month and that they are returning to Israel. Immediately after the hearing, the consul and his son left the courthouse without answering journalists’ questions.
