Abihome GmbH from Essen was the first provider to “put a completely digital solution on the market for organizing Abitur levels,” says Managing Director Johannes Kautz. It was the first company to offer multiple products. The business idea came about by organizing graduation shirts and graduation newspapers for their own year. The Abihome app was released in 2018. The company has been offering its services in the Gradoo app since 2022.

Graduating classes can be organized with the app, even at the end of the tenth grade or at the end of the university degree. Kautz, who has around forty employees, says they are the only supplier to offer completely customized textiles in fashion quality. There are hundreds of templates for this in the app, or you can get motif suggestions for your own motto free of charge.

In the app you can also find distributors of evening wear. And you can get help finding a location for the graduation ceremony or sponsors for the school newspaper. It is also possible to book a photo team. This can be on site at the graduation ceremony or take profile and course photos for the school newspaper.

Also in English and Turkish

The app is available in German, English and Turkish; it can be downloaded for free. According to the company, it is used by around two-thirds of all Abitur levels. Schools in Turkey and international schools also use them. The school-leaving papers and school-leaving books from around 3,000 schools are printed every year with runs of 1,600 to 1,700 copies. “This makes us pretty much the largest provider on the market. The same applies to textiles. But of course there are many smaller and local providers who offer parts of our service portfolio,” reports Kautz.

“The year 2020 was initially a state of shock,” he says. But we got through the Corona period quite well. In 2021, compared to 2020, sales increased by a good 60 percent. In 2021, around 600,000 course books were also produced for universities. According to Abihome, in 2022 it achieved sales of more than 6 million euros. The company earns money through services and through the transmission of advertising partners.

Linnea Büttner, a student at the Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Gießen, primarily used the app with her class in mid-2022 to collect data for the school leaving book, such as pictures, profiles and rankings. “Overall, everything was very easy to understand,” she says. “One positive thing was that I had a contact person from Abihome who I could always contact as soon as we had problems.” The program for the Abi book cost 36 euros a month. “All in all, I would say that the app was good for collecting the data, but we still had a lot of work to do in the end,” summarizes Büttner.
