Mostafizur Rahman’s journey in this year’s IPL started in a great way. He captured the commemorative purple cap for the highest wicket-taker. But the Bangladeshi pacer had to lose that cap due to poor performance. However, in the last match, Mustafiz again came to the top of the list of highest wicket takers after bowling well. But did not get the purple cap. But why?
On Sunday (April 28) against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mustafiz took 2 wickets with great bowling. His wicket number is 14 in 8 matches in the tournament. Jasprit Bumrah of Mumbai Indians and Harshal Patel of Punjab Kings have 14 wickets equal to Mostafiz. But the purple cap belongs to Bumrah.
Why is Bumrah in possession of the cap even after playing one more match? Although the question is here, the rule is clear. The rule of IPL is that when multiple bowlers get equal wickets, economy is considered in deciding the top spot i.e. how many runs per over. This is where Mustafiz has fallen behind.
Bumrah has so far bowled 239 runs in 36 overs at 6.63 runs per over. And Mustafiz scored 296 runs in 30.2 overs, at an economy of 9.75. Hershal is in the third. However, there is a chance for Mustafiz to rise to the top in the next match. He is likely to be in the playing XI for the Chennai-Punjab match on May 1.
