Bangalore: Islamic students have announced that they will approach the Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court ruling on the hijab. On December 28 last year, the college administration banned the wearing of hijab at a government girls’ high school in Udupi district of Karnataka. Six students from the same college staged a protest. In this context, pro-Hindu students across the state began protesting on January 1 against wearing khawi and hijab. At the same time, protests erupted across the state in support of the hijab.

In this context, Udupi College students filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court on January 31 against the ban on hijab. In this case, Pip. Whereas in government high school the college administration should only wear the guiding uniform. Thus various colleges continued to announce holidays. In this context, on February 8, Judge Krishna Dixit in the Karnataka High Court began hearing the petition against the ban on hijab. The judge ruled that the case should be referred to the Additional Sessions Court for trial. The case came up for hearing on February 10 before a bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Krishna Dixit and JM Ghazi. At that time, an interim order was issued prohibiting students from wearing religious identity clothing inside the college. It was announced that the verdict would be delivered on March 15 (today) at 10.30 am.

As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges across the state have been given a day off today as riots are likely to erupt regardless of who gets the verdict. Respective district collectors have issued 144 restraining orders in more than 15 districts, including Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Kalpurgi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Udupi, Darwar, Kolar and Tumkur. Protests, rallies and processions have been banned in districts where the ban is in force. IG and DGP Praveen Sood has issued orders to the district SPs to prevent any untoward incident across the state.

In this situation, at exactly 10.30 this morning, the judges sat in their seats and began to read the verdict. The judges ruled that wearing the hijab was not a necessary part of Islam. The order issued by the Karnataka state government to wear the same uniform in government schools will go through. In this situation, the Islamic students have announced that they will approach the Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court verdict regarding the hijab. Their lawyers say the students have faith in the courts and the law.
