THE EAGLE. Three of them were walking along a path that leads to Pizzo Cefalone, a peak at 2,533 meters above sea level in the Gran Sasso massif, when one of them slipped and, after desperately trying to find a handhold, fell. This seems, at the moment, to be the reconstruction of what happened today on the Abruzzo mountain; initially it was thought to be an accident that occurred on the wall.

The injuries sustained in the fall left no escape for the hiker, a 56-year-old from Pescara. The anesthetist and resuscitation doctor on board the regional helicopter rescue service, assisted in ground operations by the helicopter rescue technician from the Abruzzo Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service (Cnsas), once he arrived on site could do nothing but confirm the man’s death, whose body was recovered in the afternoon.

The 56-year-old’s friends were rescued and taken back to Campo Imperatore; they did not suffer any injuries, but are in shock. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of L’Aquila, with territorial jurisdiction, has ordered a cadaveric examination; a decision is awaited as to whether or not to perform an autopsy.
