Da I stand thus: face to face with a he-goat blocking my way. His gaze is evil, his stance threatening, his smell pungent. And behind him lurks a whole herd of goats. I pull out my phone, type “rutting season goats”, answer: now – not good at all. If I wasn’t standing in the way, the animals would probably be enjoying themselves. The goat doesn’t like that someone is here, as his bowed head shows.
This is his territory, this is his herd, his way. So all that remains is the disorderly retreat, flight, as fast as one’s legs will carry. The hormonally intoxicated animal follows me down the mountain for a few meters before letting go of me. I had imagined things differently alone on the South Tyrolean Sonnenberg just below the Meraner Höhenweg. The destination, an alpine pasture at over 2000 meters, is still many hours of hiking up the mountain.
