I played with Ryu Hyun-jin during my time at the LA Dodgers.
“The secret to running for a long time is effort.”
Rich Hill (44, Boston) has been on the mound for 20 consecutive seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB).
Hill pitched 1 1/3 innings in the top of the 7th inning with 2 outs and a runner on first base in a 0-2 MLB regular season home game against Toronto on the 30th. It was his first appearance in about 11 months, but he struck out 2 batters and held them to no hits or runs. Boston lost 0-2 that day.
With this, Hill has become a pitcher who has stepped on the MLB mound for 20 consecutive seasons without missing a single year since his debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2005. He also played with Hyun-jin Ryu (37, Hanwha) in the LA Dodgers from 2016 to 2019. Hill, who was released as a free agent (FA) in San Diego last year, received offers from three teams after the season ended, but declined them. Until recently, Hill worked as a coach for his son Bryce, who plays in the Little League.
Boston, aiming to advance to the postseason, signed a minor league contract with Hill on the 18th to strengthen its left-handed bullpen and called him up to the MLB on the 28th. Hill, who is also the oldest active MLB player, said after the game against Toronto, “Many people ask me, ‘What’s the secret?’ In the end, it’s all about effort. I worked hard with the mindset of filling the basket by dropping water one drop at a time every day.” Hill has appeared in 383 MLB games and has a record of 90 wins, 73 losses, and an ERA of 4.01 before the game against Toronto.
