Hillshire Brands Company Recalls Blended Meat and Poultry Smoked Sausage Products Due to Contamination

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2, 2023 – Hillshire Brands Company, a St. Joseph, Mo. establishment, is recalling approximately 15,876 pounds of blended meat and poultry smoked sausage products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically bone fragments, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The ready-to-eat blended meat and poultry smoked sausage items were produced on June 14, 2023. The affected products include 14-ounce cryovac packages containing one rope of “HILLSHIRE FARM SMOKED SAUSAGE MADE WITH PORK, TURKEY, BEEF.” The recalled sausages have lot codes in the form of the establishment number, line number, and time of production in hours:minutes:seconds, with “EST. 756A 20 19:00:00 through 21:59:59 and EST. 756A 21 19:00:00 through 21:59:59” and a use by date of “Nov 11 23” printed on the front of the package.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. 756A” and were shipped to retail stores in California, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The recall was initiated after the company received consumer complaints regarding bone fragments in the product. FSIS also received one consumer complaint regarding this issue. Although there has been one reported oral injury associated with the consumption of this product, FSIS has not received any additional reports of injury or illness from its consumption. Consumers who have purchased these sausages are urged not to consume them and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

FSIS is concerned that some of the recalled products may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. The agency routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to ensure that recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and take necessary steps to remove the product from availability to consumers. Consumers are encouraged to regularly check the FSIS website (www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls) for the retail distribution list(s) associated with this recall.
