During the current Awami League government, Hilsa production has increased to 5.71 million metric tons, said Fisheries and Animal Resources Minister Abdur Rahman.

The Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources gave this information in response to a written question by independent member Pankaj Nath in the session of the National Assembly on Monday (May 6).

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the session.

Abdur Rahman said that the production of hilsa was 2.99 lakh metric tons during the formation of the current Awami League government in the fiscal year 2008-09. After the formation of the Awami League government, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will take various practical steps to increase the production of hilsa from 10 kg to 40 kg per month, which will increase the production of hilsa to 5.71 lakh metric tons in the fiscal year 2022-23.

He said that among the steps taken by the government to conserve Ma Hilsa and Jatka Hilsa, implementation of the Fisheries Act through mobile court, operations and VGF (rice) distribution to fishermen under the humanitarian assistance program for the livelihood of fishermen during the prohibition of Ma Hilsa and Jatka extraction is one of them.
