But Telugu superstar Allu Arjun’s film Pushpa, released at the end of the year 2021, gave a tremendous challenge to Bollywood. This film directly entered the 100 crore club. At the same time, in the year 2022, Bahubali fame director SS Rajamouli’s Telugu superstar Ram Charan and Jr NTR starrer film RRR entered the 200 crore club at the Hindi box office, and earned more than 1000 crores worldwide. After that, Kannada superstar Yash’s franchise film KGF 2 entered the 400 crore club at the Hindi box office and entered the 1000 crore club worldwide. Not only this, Kannada star Rishabh Shetty’s film Kantara, released in the last months of the year, was also well liked by Hindi speaking audiences.

By the end of 2022, all the experts of the film world had started reading the elegy of Hindi cinema. With big Bollywood films being postponed one after the other, everyone was saying that now South cinema will rule even among Hindi speaking audiences. Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘Pathan’, released on the Republic Day weekend in early 2023, changed this entire equation. King Khan’s film, which was yearning for a hit for a long time, not only entered the 500 crore club at the domestic box office in a strong manner, but also showed the power of Hindi films by earning more than 1000 crores worldwide.

This trend of Hindi films’ comeback that started with Shahrukh’s film continued throughout the year. Sunny Deol’s film ‘Gadar 2’, released on Independence Day weekend, surprised everyone by entering the 500 crore club, while the very next month SRK’s film ‘Jawaan’ broke its own record and entered the 600 crore club. This film also earned more than 1000 crore worldwide. While Ranbir Kapoor’s film ‘Animal’, released in the last month of the year, surprised everyone by entering the 500 crore club in a surprising way. This film also earned more than 900 crore rupees worldwide.

Producer and film business analyst Girish Johar agrees with the growing popularity of Hindi cinema. He says, ‘After Covid, the strong performance of Telugu films like ‘Pushpa’ and ‘RRR’ and Kannada films like ‘KGF 2′ and Kantara had increased the problems of Hindi cinema people. Especially the year 2022 was very bad for Bollywood. But in the year 2023, four Bollywood films entered the 500 crore club and this year another film has reached this elite club. Of course, it will be called a strong comeback of Hindi cinema that during this period many Hindi films earned more than Rs 1000 crore worldwide.’
The earning process continues
The year 2024 may not have been as explosive for Hindi films as the previous year. But the series of bumper success of Hindi films is still continuing. In the year 2023, four films created a new record by entering the 500 crore club. In the current year too, the film Stree 2 has surprised the film makers by entering the 500 crore club. It is believed that this film can soon enter the 600 crore club. At the same time, the earnings of this film worldwide can be more than Rs 850 crore.
Hindi cinema gave recognition to the world
Even before Corona, Aamir Khan’s film ‘Dangal’ had earned the title of the highest grossing Indian film by earning more than Rs 1900 crore worldwide. However, a large part of Aamir’s film’s earnings came from the collection from China. Whereas apart from that, no other Indian film had even reached the 1000 crore club. In such a situation, in the year 2023, the film ‘Jawaan’ earned 1148 crores and the film Pathan earned 1050 crores, showing that Hindi cinema is very popular among viewers around the world. Apart from this, Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal’ earned 917 crores worldwide, ‘Stree 2’ earned 770 crores and ‘Gadar 2’ earned 686 crores.
