Mumbai — Hindi cinema rebounded spectacularly in 2025, achieving its highest-ever box office haul with a total of $609.78 million (Rs55 billion), according to figures from Ormax Media. The resurgence marks a significant shift after several years of South Indian films dominating the Indian box office.
Hollywood’s Strong Comeback
Non-Indian films, primarily Hollywood releases, also saw a substantial 49% increase in revenue, reaching $155 million (Rs14 billion), led by Disney’s Avatar: Fire And Ash.
- India’s overall box office hit a record $1.48 billion (Rs133.95 billion) in 2025.
- The share of South Indian films dubbed in Hindi significantly declined.
- Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh, became the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.
- Hollywood experienced its strongest year since the pandemic, driven by titles like Avatar: Fire And Ash.
- Rising ticket prices contributed to the overall box office growth.
Ormax Media also reported that the Indian box office reached an all-time high of $1.48 billion (Rs133.95 billion) last year, surpassing the previous record of $1.35 billion (Rs122.26 billion) set in 2023.
Hindi Cinema’s Revival Fueled by Originals
The growth in Hindi cinema was largely driven by original Hindi-language titles, a departure from recent years where dubbed South Indian films contributed significantly to revenue. In 2025, South Indian films dubbed in Hindi accounted for only 7% of the box office share, a steep drop from 31% the previous year.
What factors contributed to the success of Hindi films in 2025? The industry saw a broader range of genres perform well, moving beyond reliance on a few star-driven hits.
Dhurandhar, a Pakistan-set spy thriller from Jio Studios starring Ranveer Singh, topped the charts with $105.25 million (Rs9.5 billion), setting a new record as the highest-grossing Hindi-language film ever. Kantara A Legend: Chapter 1, a Kannada-language prequel, came in second with $80 million, followed by the Hindi historical epic Chhaava, earning $76.5 million.
South Indian Film Industries See a Shift
Conversely, the combined share of the four South Indian language film industries decreased from 48% in 2024 to 44% in 2025, with Kannada-language films being the only segment to show growth. In 2024, Telugu-language films Pushpa 2: The Rule and Kalki 2898 AD held the top two spots at the Indian box office.
Ormax founder and CEO Shailesh Kapoor explained that the performance of the South Indian industries was largely due to release schedules. “In 2024, two big South Indian films contributed around 20% to overall box office just by themselves. In 2025, a few big South Indian films didn’t fire as expected and there were no huge franchise films on the level of Pushpa or K.G.F.,” he said.

Genre Diversity Drives Hindi Film Confidence
Despite the controversies surrounding Dhurandhar – including legal challenges and accusations of nationalism – Kapoor noted that the film’s success, and the broader recovery of Hindi cinema, stemmed from a wider variety of genres. “We had hits like Saiyaara, a romantic drama, which the industry believed had lost impact as a theatrical genre; Chhaava, which is a historical epic, not a conventional action film; and an animated feature like Mahavatar Narsimha, which did huge numbers considering animation has not really taken off in India.”
Kapoor added that the increased volume of films across different genres restored confidence to Mumbai studios, which had been hesitant to invest in theatrical releases in recent years.
Looking Ahead: 2026’s Promising Slate
The upcoming year boasts a strong lineup of both Hindi and South Indian films. Hindi titles include a sequel to Dhurandhar, titled Dhurandhar: The Revenge; Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love And War and Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana Part 1, both starring Ranbir Kapoor; and Shah Rukh Khan’s King.
South India is also preparing to release several major films, including Geetu Mohandas’ Toxic: A Fairytale For Grown-ups, starring Yash; the Malayalam title Patriot, featuring Mohanlal and Mamooty; and Telugu films Peddi with Ram Charan and Dragon with Jr NTR.
Ormax highlighted an upcoming clash between Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Toxic: A Fairytale For Grown-ups, set for release on March 19, as one of the biggest box office showdowns in North India since 2015, when Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani competed with Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale.
“Currently, Dhurandhar: The Revenge holds the edge over Toxic [the Hindi version], primarily on the strength of the franchise value built through the first film’s unqualified success, and its subsequent premiere on streaming, which has been timed perfectly to coincide with the title announcement of the second film,” Ormax reported. “However, the main campaign for Toxic hasn’t started yet, and the film has significant headroom for growth…OCX tracking data suggests that both films have strong audience traction, and their relative share of box office on the first day will also come down to their relative release scale. We’ve seen in multiple instances that the film opening lower can go on to become the bigger film on the strength of its content.”
