Sean John Combs (55), a leading figure in the American hip-hop scene known as ‘Puff Daddy’, has been arrested.
According to foreign news agencies such as the Associated Press on the 16th (local time), Combs was recently arrested at a hotel in Manhattan, New York, where he was staying, and is being held by the Department of Homeland Security Investigations. In March, Department of Homeland Security agents also searched and seized Combs’ homes in Los Angeles (LA) and Miami.
The specific charges are unknown, but it is believed to be sexual assault. The indictment against Combs reportedly states that he “engaged in a pervasive and persistent pattern of abuse.”
Combs denies the charges. His attorneys counter that Combs went to New York voluntarily in anticipation of the indictment.
Combs was embroiled in controversy earlier this year after a video surfaced showing him violently assaulting his girlfriend of eight years, American R&B singer Cassie.
Combs has been embroiled in a string of lawsuits in addition to the Cash Gun, as his scandalous past has come to light. In February, a music producer filed a lawsuit against Combs, claiming that Combs had solicited her for prostitution and pressured her into having sex. Since then, anonymous accusers have come forward to claim that he had sexually abused her. Combs has been embroiled in ten lawsuits since November of last year, nine of which are alleged sexual assaults.
Combs is considered the most influential hip-hop producer and label executive of the past 30 years. He is the founder of Bad Boy Records. He has worked with rapper Notorious B.I.G., American soul singer Mary J. Blige, and American R&B star Usher, and has won three Grammy Awards. He served as the president of Revolt TV, which supports African-American music and social justice, but resigned in November last year after sexual assault allegations surfaced.
