No question of seeing his music looted by record companies… In an interview given two years ago to the magazine People, Sinead O’Connor had been very clear about the steps to take in the event of a sudden death : she had warned her children that it was better to call her accountant than the firefighters… “If you look closely, artists are much more valuable when they are dead than alive”, explained the singer to the American magazine. “It’s a little disgusting what the record companies are doing…” She cites rapper Tupac as an example, who saw the number of albums explode after his assassination in 1996.

“That’s why I’ve always told my children since they were very small: if your mother dies tomorrow, before you call the fire department, call my accountant and make sure the record companies don’t start publish my songs without telling you where the money is. In the same interview, the Irish artist said she was horrified to see how the musical heritage of deceased artists was exploited to the extreme, through advertisements or the release of unpublished songs, as for Prince whose death, in 2016 , was followed by the release of many new titles.

READ ALSOMusic – Prince: funk and glory “All musicians have songs in the drawers that bother them and are shitty. We don’t want anyone to hear them. Prince was someone who released all the songs he recorded, so if some of them weren’t released, that meant he really didn’t want them to be. And I can’t stand people breaking into safes. »

The question will inevitably arise for Sinead O’Connor, since she was working on a new album before her death, which occurred on July 26 when she was 56 years old. His managers have already declared that “wonderful projects were underway at that time”, even citing the possibility of a biopic on his career and his life… It will now be up to his heirs to decide, but the pressure from the houses of discs is obviously likely to be the strongest, especially since the new album was almost finished.

Three direct heirs

At the head of a fortune estimated at 4.5 million euros, Sinead O’Connor leaves behind three children of different fathers, including Jake, his eldest, born of his marriage to music producer John Reynolds, 36 years old today and himself the father of a boy. She is also the mother of a 28-year-old daughter, Roisin, whom she had with journalist John Waters, not to mention her younger brother Yeshua, born in 2006 from her affair with businessman Frank Bonadio. She also had another child, Shane, with musician Donal Lunny, but who took his own life aged 17 in January 2022, an absolute tragedy from which she had never really recovered.

Already depressed, bipolar and mentally fragile, the loss of her son left her psychologically devastated, reviving her suicidal thoughts. Last month, the singer still published a message in which she again shared her pain. “He was the love of my life, the light of my spirit, she wrote, referring to her missing son. We were one soul in two bodies. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. And to add that she now lived “like an undead creature of the night”. If his death is not considered suspicious, justice still ordered an autopsy to remove the last doubts about the causes of his death.
