The New York Times published a list of the 100 best books of the 21st century published in the United States in the English language, and it included the novel by author Hisham Matar.

The list, published since 2000, was compiled based on a survey of hundreds of literary figures who identified the books, stating that they were published with the aim of inspiring others.

The list included “The Return: Fathers, Sons, and the Middle Earth” by New York-born Libyan writer Hisham Matar.

Matar won the Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography for his novel, in which he talks about his father, whom he lost in a kidnapping in Cairo in 1990.

This book was published in 2016, in which he talked about his return trip to Libya in 2012, and his search for the truth about his father’s disappearance.

Matar was 19 years old when his father was kidnapped and taken to a prison in Libya. After the fall of Gaddafi, he tried to make a trip to his country to search for his father.

In 2018, former US President Barack Obama recommended reading The Return, saying it was “a beautifully crafted memoir that skillfully reflects Libya’s modern history, with the author’s relentless search for his father who disappeared in Gaddafi’s prisons.”

Hisham was born in New York to Libyan parents, spent his childhood in Tripoli and Cairo, and lived most of his life in London. He has several literary works, and his books have been translated into more than 30 languages.
