jpnn.comJAKARTA – Historian Asvi Warman Adam revealed that Soeharto made various strategies so that his position as President of the Republic of Indonesia would last for many years.

He said this when he was a resource person at the Book Review: NU, PNI, and the 1971 Election Violence by Ken Ward at Bakoel Koffie, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (2/4).

Initially, Asvi was a historian who believed that Suharto carried out a crawling coup against Sukarno from the events of 1 October 1965 until he was appointed leader of Indonesia in 1968.

“This is a series of events that if we see a coup is creeping up,” he said in a discussion, Tuesday.

He said that after becoming the second President of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto carried out various operations to maintain power.

For example, said Asvi, Soeharto postponed the implementation of elections previously determined by the MPR in 1968 to 1971.

He thinks that the man nicknamed the Smiling General wants to finalize political consolidation, thereby delaying the implementation of the elections.

“So, the election was held in ’71. So, three years were enough, Suharto used intensive time to win,” he said.
