This evening Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz face off in the final of the US Open. The 144th edition will determine a new winner: either the first Italian ever in the men’s tournament or the first American since 2003. The tennis players who have won the most times are: Sears, Larned, and Tilden, who claimed it 7 times. Their successes are lost in the mists of time. In the Open era, the record is held by Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer, who have each won 5 times in New York. Nadal and Djokovic have four victories.
Connors, Sampras, and Federer: the most victorious players
Richard Sears won the US Open seven times in a row, from 1881 to 1887, at the end of the 19th century. Seven victories also for William Larned, who won in 1901, 1902, and from 1907 to 1911. And then there are the seven triumphs of the legend Bill Tilden, who won from 1920 to 1925 and in 1929.
Five are the victories of Jimmy Connors, who marked an era in tennis and faced great rivals along the way, notably Borg and McEnroe. Jimbo won in 1974, 1976, 1978, 1982, and 1983. Pete Sampras won at just 19 years old in 1990, repeated in 1993, 1995, 1996, and closed his career with a wonderful and unexpected victory in 2002. Five consecutive triumphs for Roger Federer (from 2004 to 2008), the last to successfully defend the US Open title. Four victories each for Nadal, Djokovic, and McEnroe.
