The Greek athlete won the silver medal, bringing our country its first medal in swimming (in a pool) in history.

An unprecedented triumph for Apostolos Chrystou and Greek swimming in Paris!

The Greek athlete won the silver medal in the 200m backstroke, giving our country its first medal in swimming (in a pool) in history.

After the “bitter” fourth place in the 100m, the athlete coached by Panagiotis Velentzas achieved what no one could have imagined, in an event where – theoretically he does not specialize.

Chrystou had an incredible race, taking a significant lead from the start. He turned at the first 100m in 55.14, faster even than Aaron Piersol’s unbeatable world record set in 2009. It was clear that he could not maintain that pace, and gradually Hungarian Hubert Kós, who was the favorite in the final, closed the gap and overtook him, winning the gold medal with a time of 1:54.26. The Greek champion gave all his remaining strength, finishing in 1:54.82, shattering Apostolos Siskos’s national record (1:55.42 from June 19 in Belgrade) and secured second place ahead of Swiss Roman Mitiukov, who took third place with a time of 1:54.85.
