New York ∙ The Huber watch believed to have been used by Adolf Hitler was auctioned for Rs 8.69 crore by an unknown person. An anonymous person auctioned a watch engraved with the swastika symbol and the English letters ‘AH’ at an auction held in the United States. The Jewish community has condemned the action of the Alexander Historical Auction House in Maryland. The company, which has auctioned Nazi symbols and historical documents before, has made it clear that its aim is only to preserve history.

Hitler’s history, which led Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945, is a bloody one of genocide. The watch is believed to have been given to Hitler as a birthday present in 1933 when he was the German Chancellor. The watch was recovered by French forces from Hitler’s holiday home in Bavaria, Berghof, in 1945. Later it passed through many hands.

After the auction information became public, objections were raised from many quarters. Also up for auction are Hitler’s wife Eva Braun’s gown and shirts with the Jude stamp worn to identify Jews.
