Not just respiratory symptoms, the signs of Covid-19 can also be recognized on the skin: this was demonstrated by an Italian research conducted with the support of the Italian Society of Medical, Surgical, Aesthetic Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (SIDeMaST), according to which there are six skin disorders that could indicate the presence of the infection and which therefore suggest the advisability of having a tampon.

Large studio

The survey, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, was conducted on two hundred cases of Covid throughout Italy to understand if there are dermatological symptoms related to the disease and if their severity is in turn connected with a more or less severe infection. A great deal of clinical information was collected for all participants (severity of Covid-19, presence or absence of other diseases, duration of skin manifestations and so on) and the results of the analysis show that the signs of Covid on the skin would be above all six, that is erythematous or measles-like lesions (present in 27 percent of cases), geloni (25 percent), chickenpox-like manifestations (16 percent), urticaria (13 percent), vasculitis (11 percent) ed bruising (3 percent). The mean duration of skin lesions was twelve days, for chilblains it reaches twenty-two days, explains the coordinator of the study Angelo Valerio Marzano, director of the School of Specialization in Dermatology and Venereology of the University of Milan.

Signs to recognize

Chilblains – says Marzano – were the prevalent symptom among young people and were associated with an almost always asymptomatic manifestation of the virus, while all the other skin signs were connected to a more or less severe form. Two previous international studies have taken that for granted the most severe skin lesions were related to a more severe form of Covid-19, thus establishing a direct proportion between aggressive skin symptoms and severity of the infection: according to our data, however, there is no direct correlation between the severity of the skin manifestation and that of Sars-CoV-2 disease. Instead, the link between increasing age and increasing severity of the disease is confirmed. According to SIDeMAST dermatologists, it is therefore advisable to pay attention to the skin e undergo a tampon, if a very extensive erythema or apparent hives suddenly appear, a bruise for which no reason, chilblains, vasculitis. Our skin could warn us and warn us in advance about what is happening in the body, giving us the possibility to move in advance and helping in the early diagnosis of the disease, which can also help avoid possible further infections, he concludes. Ketty Peris, President of SIDeMAST.
