Mr. Bouhlal, who was delivering a speech on behalf of the ambassadors of the Middle East region accredited to the Japanese capital during a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Middle East Institute of Japan, recalled in particular that in accordance with the mission entrusted to the Sovereign as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, HM the King has never ceased to call for the preservation of the legal, cultural and religious status of the holy city, as a common heritage of humanity, but also as a meeting place and symbol of peaceful coexistence between the followers of the three monotheistic religions.

In a context of renewed tensions between Palestinians and Israelis, Mr. Bouhlal was keen to recall the importance of working together to restore a constructive dialogue between the two parties with the aim of achieving lasting peace in the region.

The diplomat, who also highlighted the importance of the Middle East region for international peace, security and stability, stressed the relevance of the Middle East Institute of Japan for promoting mutual understanding between Japan and Middle Eastern countries.

Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed his country’s readiness, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, to play its full role on the international stage.

For his part, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi called on the international community to continue efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East region.

“Japan will continue efforts to help achieve a solution based on the two-state principle,” he said.

The Middle East Institute of Japan is a prestigious think tank, established in 1956. Recognized as a public utility foundation, the institute develops studies and analyses that inform Japanese policy makers regarding the Middle East region.
