HMD and Mattel are launching a Barbie cell phone. The retro-looking flip phone is intended to encourage users to do a digital detox.

Smartphone manufacturer HMD has presented a new Barbie-style flip phone that stands out due to its pink color and playful details. The HMD Barbie Phone was developed in collaboration with Mattel and is available for 130 euros. It is a so-called feature phone that focuses on simplicity and is intended to offer the user a break from the smartphone.

The phone does not have any apps as it is based on the S30+ operating system, which only supports calls and SMS. The technical features are very similar to the Nokia 2660 Flip, another device from HMD that is significantly cheaper. However, the Barbie Phone offers some improvements such as a USB-C port and Bluetooth 5.0.

In addition to the glowing buttons, hidden designs such as palm trees, hearts and flamingos are also visible in the dark. When switched on, a voice greets users with “Hi Barbie”. The front of the device is reflective and can be used as a mirror – for example for spontaneous selfies or to freshen up make-up.

The phone’s battery is replaceable and has a capacity of 1,450 mAh, which according to the manufacturer allows a talk time of around nine hours. The device supports LTE networks and can accommodate two SIM cards. The internal memory is small at 128 megabytes, but can be expanded to up to 32 gigabytes using a micro SD card.

The HMD Barbie Phone is delivered in a kind of jewelry box as packaging. The delivery also includes two additional back covers as well as stickers and glitter stones to personalize the device – as well as a pearl cell phone strap and attachable charms (lucky charms).

In addition to its eye-catching appearance, the phone also offers classic functions such as an MP3 player and an FM radio. The camera with flashlight function has a VGA resolution of 0.3 megapixels and delivers so-called Y2K images. This trend is currently particularly popular among young users who are increasingly taking photos with classic cell phones or vintage cameras.

The 2.8-inch main display can show incoming calls as well as the time and date. The software also features a Malibu theme from the well-known classic “Snake”. Even the ringtones are borrowed from the Barbie universe, with names like “DreamHouse” or “Azure Barbie”.

HMD emphasizes that the phone deliberately avoids social networks and web browsers in order to minimize distractions and allow users to concentrate more on the real world.
